Personal Trainer

John Tavares:
“I’ve been involved with health and fitness for twenty years. Over the past four years I worked hard to pursue my personal trainer certification. My training approach is to discuss the needs and goals of the client, and to design and customize a personal program for each individual. My expertise promotes a strong core in a lean mass philosophy.
My training programs incorporate free weights, self body movements as well as stationary weight machines and cardio. I enjoy working with all ages and body types, whether it be bodybuilding, weight loss, or just keeping fit and trim. I keep workouts fresh and challenging with workout routines that incorporate new moves and ideas. I am also a wellness coach trained to help clients make good nutritional choices for optimal health. I look forward to training with all the new and existing wildcat members.”

“Working out with John has been time well spent! As frequent flyer at the gym I stared getting tired of doing the same workouts week after week. John helped me to spice up my workouts and give me some new ideas to help me really shape and tone my body. As a contestant in the Miss New Hampshire Scholarship Program looking my very best is important! John helped me to fine tune not only my resistance training workouts but my nutritional habits as well. After a few sessions I was already feeling the difference. I never realized how motivating it can be to workout with a trainer and how much more I was able to focus on technique. With constant tweaking my personal goals were more easily achieved and working out felt fun and exciting again!”

I am a part-time ski instructor and I asked John to help me get in shape for the current ski season. In the course of seven sessions, he prepared a series of exercises that concentrated on balance and leg and core strength. A couple of the sessions also included work on upper body and arms as well. The final session was a tour of the fitness machines.
I thought that John did a great job tailoring the workouts to my needs. The bottom line was that my skiing was definitely stronger as a result of working with John.
He had a good sense of how hard to push (encourage) me in order to maximize effect without risking a chance of getting hurt. He also patiently tolerated my brand of humor. I would certainly recommend John to anyone who has my sort of goals in mind.
Sincerely,
Phil D.

Dear Wildcat Fitness, August 8, 2012
I am a sixty-seven year old woman who has been a member of your fitness center since Day 1. Both my husband and I have enjoyed using your facility over the years at our pace. But it was not until we decided to celebrate our thirty-fifth anniversary by going to Rome, Venice and Florence in September ’12 that I decided I would need to improve my balance and endurance as a 2 mile walking tourist.
John Tavares has been willing to listen to my concerns and my aches and pains so that I know he has my welfare first and foremost. I would say he has taken me from a couch potato to a willing tourist who can handle ten days in Italy. He has encouraged me all the way as I have increased my weights from a beginning three pounds to an average weight lifter of my age, and my stamina on the treadmill has increased.
John has been able to explain each and every exercise to me, as well as to coordinate with my doctor and physical therapist so that his training fits within their recommendations for a patient with lower back pain and leg pain. He has encouraged me to be a willing participant in improving myself through mat, ball and machine exercise. And I have learned from him that I can push myself a llittle more, instead of quitting near the end of a workout.
I would not hesitate to recommend him to any age person for his knowledge, encouragement and enthusiasm. (Besides, he promised that he could get me to participate in a walking marathon in the near future.)
Again I think John Tavares is an excellent trainer with good background knowledge, who has a positive reinforcement style, and is a nice guy to boot.
You have a great employee.
Sincerely yours,
Robin

“Staying in shape has always been very important to me, but I felt like I was doing the same routine over and over again. John added tons of variety to my routine with exercises I never would have known about if he hadn’t showed them to me. Many of these exercises combined cardio and strength, making them extremely effective. He explained and demonstrated each move thoroughly and patiently and always explained how to do the moves correctly. I left my workouts with John feeling accomplished, whereas before I would leave the gym feeling like I could have done more. He showed me the proper way to lift and the right amount of cardio to do, which is something that can be very confusing. The workouts were fun and challenging and I’m still keeping up with the exercises he taught me to do. He is also very knowledgeable about nutrition and was helpful in explaining the right kinds of foods to eat before and after exercise, and how much protein to have. All in all, John is a great trainer and I recommend him to anyone who wants to get in shape or stay in shape.”

“As a nutrition major, health and wellness is a major part of my life. I would try to go to the gym as much as I could and maintain a health weight since I was taught how it overall effects your body and health. Although I have a background in health, I was not using my time in the gym effectively. John showed me how to do the most effective exercises, that show the biggest results. Before I had training sessions with John, I would find myself going to the gym and doing the same exact thing every time. I would do some cardio, abs, a back machine and leave, thinking I was going to get results, and thinking I was working myself. After our first training session together, I was sore for a few days, which is something I did not get to during my own workouts, and quickly I found it was one of the best feelings. Waking up in the morning and feeling how worked my legs were the day before motivated me to keep going to the gym and participating in John’s program because for the first time I felt my body respond. If you’re tired of going to the gym and not feeling worked, or not seeing the results you want, I highly recommend John, because after meeting with him, I can say with confidence, I am finally working towards the healthy body I have always wanted!”

“I am currently a student at UNH, and have also been a member at Wildcat Fitness for quite some time now. Being a PreVet major, the school work and stress seem to be never ending. While going to Wildcat Fitness was a great way to exercise and burn off all of that excess stress, I started to fall off of the bandwagon of exercising, just like many people do. I had started to come up with excuses of doing school work instead of exercising, which eventually spiraled into doing little to no exercise at all anymore. One day though, while walking to class, I realized not only how much my physical fitness had declined, but also how much my body had changed. It was at that point that I realized that while all of those excuses of not working out had been an easy and lazy fix in the short term scheme of things, that my fitness had suffered greatly in the long run. It was this change in physical fitness that was not only my turning point, but my inspiration to hit the gym once again. Except, this time, I was older, and far more out of shape than I had ever been in my life due to not exercising or playing any sports. This is where John came in. I knew that my knowledge of exercise was not extensive enough to regain my prior fitness level on my own, and that I would need help. Luckily for me, Wildcat Fitness had a trainer on staff. I signed up for numerous training sessions, and have been nothing but pleased. John is not only motivating, but keeps the workouts new, exciting, and engaging. He is always available for any questions you may have, or for any tips or advice you may be seeking. He will push you to your limits at times, but never too far. He has a great way of showing the person he is training of the abilities they have, which they may not have ever known. While I still may be working back to my former goal of physical fitness, I have not only a new found confidence and eagerness at the gym, but also the knowing that I will ultimately reach my goal with the knowledge that I have learned from John. Training with him has been one of the most beneficial learning experiences I have had. While there were days when I, again, did not want to go to the gym, I still went, and was always happy that I did so after. Working out has now become something enjoyable with the help having a personal trainer, and I will continue to do so! Overall, I would highly recommend signing up for personal training!”

I am an undergraduate student at UNH and I absolutely love going to Wildcat Fitness. Every time I walk in, friendly staff always welcomes me at the door. I never have to wait for a machine and the gym has all the equipment I need plus much more. It is always very clean and it is filled with new machines. The membership packages are very affordable, especially for a college student like me. They have special rates for students, which is nice that they understand not everyone can afford an expensive gym membership. This is such a great gym and I am going to be very sad once I graduate and have to leave.
One of the best opportunities I had was to personal train with John Tavares. He is such a nice guy and an amazing personal trainer. I love to do cardio and he showed me ways I can improve my workouts by adding muscle training into my cardio routines. I always steered clear of the weight machines because I was never really sure how to use them correctly. He showed me the proper way to use the machines and different techniques that he had developed in order to use the machines to their full potential. He motivated me to push myself more than I ever thought I could. I was always excited to have personal training sessions; he would give me such great advice and tips. I would definitely advise people to personal train with him, he taught me so much about the weight machines, my muscles, and the proper foods I should be eating. He puts 100% into every session and truly cares about his clients.

“I’ve been a member of Wildcat Fitness for quite a few years but, up until two months ago, could count the number of actual visits to the gym on one hand. There were a few factors that stopped me from coming to the gym – all of which are probably the same factors that would keep many 42 year old women away… I’m super busy parenting and working. Perhaps the largest part of what kept me away, though, was that I was intimidated by the gym. When I did go I would just go to the treadmill because I wasn’t quite sure what else to do. Well finally, at the end of February, I stopped into Wildcat Fitness on a whim and asked about working with a personal trainer to just learn the basics. I signed up for six sessions with John Tavares. During the first session John did a great job listening to my questions and ideas about what I wanted and then immediately began organizing a basic plan for me to follow. John carefully explained each exercise, the muscular benefits, and possible variations. He had great nutritional advice about how to eat and hydrate before and after workouts. John also carefully monitored to make sure I was working hard but not over exerting, and completing the exercises correctly. Another great benefit about working with John is that he is there most mornings and is able to answer any quick question I might have or remind me how to use a piece of equipment. I am so glad I signed up for training sessions with John. He is motivating but not overwhelming. He is very knowledgeable but not intimidating. Now I am coming to the gym regularly and feel great. I would recommend working with John to anyone who is ready to jump start an exercise plan but needs a little extra support to get going and stick to it!”

“I signed up for personal training sessions with John looking to have more focus with my workouts. And of course to tone up! I was tired of my haphazard workouts of 30 minutes of cardio, occasionally followed by some upper body or core work. I really wanted more guidance and consistency. John has helped me to develop a routine that I feel I can accomplish on my own. He’s taught me the importance of building muscle strength and not just focusing on the same boring old cardio routine. The variety I now have in my routine, and the goals we’ve set, have captured my interest and kept me completing my workouts consistently. But John really does more than just give you a 1 hour strength training session. He’s dedicated to giving his clients the best possible training routine and training sessions, so he incorporates nutrition tips and other health related topics into your plan. The variety of routine, nutrition tips and accountability has helped me stay focused and feeling like I can attain my ultimate fitness goals! I would highly recommend signing up for a session!

“I have been working out with John for the past two months. Not only was I uncomfortable and a bit intimidated (52 yrs old) with the gym scene, I had no upper body strength and was not able to do even one push-up. I am now very comfortable in the gym and I can do push-ups, not many, but I can do some!!! With John’s motivation and professionalism, I love working out. Thank you, Johnny T!!!

I committed to 12 training sessions with John 7 weeks ago. It is the first time I have worked with a trainer. I used to work out regularly on my own a number of years ago, mostly free weights, some machines, and cardio. I joined the gym last August and was working out twice a week, using the machines instead of free weights. I wasn’t seeing any changes in my weight or muscle tone. Then I noticed the banner posted on the front wall and decided to speak with John.
I completed the 12 sessions this past Saturday and committed to another twelve. John focuses on the core and I love it. I feel my posture has improved and my core is stronger. I am using free weights again which is my preference. John’s trainings are always different. There is something new each time. He pushes and encourages. The full body moves are a workout! He is a great resource for variations on exercises and nutrition.
I have lost weight and fat mass. Friends who are members of the gym have watched my training sessions with John. They’ve questioned me and I’ve suggested they give John a try.

I recently signed up for a personal training session with John. I have been an avid member of Wildcat Fitness, minus the few months I was away studying abroad, and I really enjoy the atmosphere of this gym. Upon returning to the states an MRI examination found five stress fractures in my foot, so needless to say my running routine came to a halt and I quickly found myself stuck in the same monotonous morning routine of lifting the same weights and doing the same cardio. However, after my training sessions with John I am now more confident with my lifting techniques and I learned so much from the short amount of time we spent together. John was able to show me the proper ways to lift and he helped explain to me what I was doing incorrectly, and how I could improve my daily workout sessions. My first session consisted of an abs workout and arms, and needless to say I finally began feeling the burn in my muscles once again. I really appreciated how he took to the time to discuss with me the areas I wanted to work on, and he also thoroughly explained and modeled each movement to ensure I was comfortable with the weights and that I was doing the movements correctly. A few days later we then did a leg workout, and the next day I certainly appreciated him showing me new lunges and squats to help improve my tone. Throughout my two sessions with John I was able to improve my workout and I also learned more than I anticipated about the proper ways of lifting, nutrition, and the importance of hydration and stretching. John is extremely knowledgeable about the gym and he was able to help me feel confident about my gym routines again. His dedication to helping those he is training is admirable and I definitely want to continue with training with John in the near future!

I am really happy with Wildcat Fitness and personal trainer John who taught me all I need to know about how to give myself a powerhouse of a full body workout. I joined because of patella pain. I had been told to strengthen my quads. This I have done and so much more! I can’t believe how much stronger and more healthy I feel after six sessions with John who seems to be particularly competent with older people’s concerns. I am much more secure in my own ability and confident with the machines and weights. Thanks John!

John has given me a real wake-up call about my fitness routine! I have been a member at the gym for a few years now, but before I trained with John, I didn’t realize how much I was wasting my time. I used to show up and do my cardio, and maybe do a few reps on one or two of the weight machines. Now, I know what a real cardio workout feels like, and I know what it means to EXHAUST my muscles so they are getting toned and constantly burning calories. I am so glad I got this wake-up call! My body began to change even through the not-so-ideal holiday eating. Now that I’m following John’s nutrition advice, things are changing fast. Best of all, I know what I need to do every time I come to the gym. Thanks John!

I met with John for about 7 sessions so I could learn the basics of lifting weights. Although I had dabbled with weightlifting in the past, I didn’t know much, and I felt that I could benefit from some instruction. The money was well spent. John taught me how to perform a variety of exercises targeting different body areas as well as full-body exercises that efficiently target multiple muscle groups at the same time. In addition, John taught me some important principles about weight training that apply to all exercises. Beyond weight training, John taught me how to change my cardio routine so I could get the greatest benefits from cardio, gave me advice on changing my diet, and taught me some effective core exercises. John is highly knowledgeable about fitness. I threw a lot of questions at him, and he easily answered all of them. John is a very professional and patient trainer, but he is also personable and develops a good rapport with his clients. As a result of John’s training, I have seen good results in only 5 months. More important, I feel that I now have the foundation of knowledge that will allow me to effectively exercise independently. I highly recommend John.
